So you’ve set up your online business and you’re ready to start making money. Great. Now all you have to do is get people to find your website. No matter how great your idea is, or how much you know people desperately need it, you still have to get found.
And on the internet, getting found is harder than you think.
You probably have some vague notion of online marketing and the need to advertise to get your product some much needed publicity. But do you know how to go about it? The best place to start is with PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising.
What is PPC?
What is PPC advertising? The internet changed the way that companies advertise forever. Yes, traditional advertising still exists, but the internet introduced a whole new set of possibilities.
You may already know about organic marketing, which is the ability for your website to be found by the search engine giants such as Google through the use of SEO. PPC is similar to this, but focuses on paying the search engines to feature your website rather than being found naturally.
It works like this: you set up an advert that appears in Google when surfers type in a certain keyword that is related to your product. If they see your ad and find it interesting then they can click on it and get taken straight to your website. Every time someone clicks on it and visits your site, you pay a pre-arranged amount of money.
Getting Started with PPC
So, how do you get started with a PPC campaign? Firstly you have to choose the right keywords to base your adverts on, which you can do using the Google AdWords tool. Once you’ve found the keywords you want, you need to bid on them. This means bidding for the amount that you will eventually pay each time someone clicks on your ads. The more popular the keyword, the more you will have to pay. But you must make sure you use suitable keywords, otherwise you won’t get found by the right people.
Next you have to write the ads. Just because you’re appearing on the results pages, you still have to get people to click on your ad. This is a skill in itself, but essentially you should write something catchy, interesting, and that really makes people want to find out more about your website. This is all a matter of practice, and as your PPC campaign develops you will find out what works and what doesn’t.
Give PPC a Go
Don’t be scared off by PPC advertising because you don’t think you have the technical know-how to succeed. Instead, embrace it as the way to succeed in online marketing. Remember that it should not come at the expense of great SEO, because organic marketing is free and can be even more effective. But PPC should be an element of your marketing campaign.
Start slowly, build up your campaign and start to see traffic to your website increase. Because you only pay when someone actually visits your site, this means they have already taken an interest in it and are therefore qualified leads. Whether you then convert them from prospects into customers, however, is another thing entirely.
